I find a lot of what I do is communicating designs. Most of what I do at work is working out the construction details for complex building components in a way that the clients can agree is correct, and our fabricators can work from. It's a simple, yet often complicated task and I rely heavily on visuals to do the talking.
For my home projects, I am designer, fabricator, and client. I find it's still helpful to fully work out the designs before beginning work. My next project is a work bench, which I'll mount casters to. My plan is to be able to roll the whole thing outside for work that can't be done indoors. Though I usually use Rhino for modeling, I find it's documentation abilities pretty weak. I remembered the sketchup environment having a few of the key components I wanted from Rhino, which it turns out are only in the pro version. However, the free version of sketchup now exists as an in-browser app, which is interesting. I like that I can embed a window viewer of the model to be spun around. I just need a way for viewers to be able to take measurements. I'll also look into Studio 360 for this.
